Highway to the Danger Zone

There is always a slight musk of danger in the air when one heads north of Wausau. This is, after all, the land of the Posse Comitatus, gangster hideouts, and a burgeoning heroin trade.

I have to think that the danger only increases when you enter this part of the state driving a silver Mercedes with a personalized license plate that screams, "I'm a Liberace impersonator!" If my unofficial survey is any indication, German-made cars are popular nowhere in Wisconsin. The only other Mercedes I have spotted was in the parking lot of an Eau Claire church yesterday. And there have two Audis, a BMW, and a single Volkswagen. That's it.

But as Owen Fenby insisted in that cult movie classic, No Sleep 'til Madison, the trip must go on.

The siren song of the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame calls from Eagle River. And your humble Commissioner must answer. Stay tuned.

Ah, I hope they still have returnables at the liquor store up there. Can still recall gettting a case for $8. Genius.

A very astute observation. Even though Wisconsin was settled by Germans, the Benz is a rarity. Be prepared to use of all of it's engineering to whisk you from harm's way.
